This Week in The Villages: Oct. 20-26
Well it doesn’t look like Barack Obama will be making it to The Villages to campaign before election day, but The Villages is getting a visit from a high powered member of the Democratic party stopping by to campaign on his behalf.
Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy will be at the Savannah Center in The Villages on Wednesday afternoon to campaign for Senator Obama. As you may know, Sarah Palin visited The Villages a few weeks ago, and over 25,000 Villagers turned out to see her. Because The Villages is traditionally known as a republican hot spot, the crowd for Caroline Kennedy’s visit is not expected to be as well attended, but she no doubt brings a star quality. Let’s hope The Villages puts party politics aside and lots of folks turn out to see her.
Meanwhile, VP-candidate Joe Biden will be near The Villages, campaigning in nearby Marion County on Tuesday.
Alright, thats enough politics for one week huh? Halloween and Thanksgiving are coming up. Have you got your pumpkins yet? Pumpkins are available at Wal-Mart and Publix. Let us know in the comments if you found a good pumpkin patch in The Villages that everyone should know about.
Thought it was always warm and sunny in Florida and The Villages? Ha! Maybe always sunny but this week we will get our first taste of winter as Old Man Winter pays a special visit to The Villages. Mid-week we should see lows in the 30’s. In case you’re wondering, WESH Channel 2 has probably the best weather coverage for The Villages and surrounding areas.
This Week in The Villages: Oct. 13-19
Expect most of the news and stories coming out of The Villages for the next couple of weeks to be dominated by the election coming up on November 4th. While the Presidential election is important for our country, there are also some important local elections in The Villages that residents, and folks thinking about moving to The Villages, should pay attention to.
Early voting starts on Monday and runs until November 1st. After that you’ll have to wait in line like everybody else on November 4th. For some Villagers though, this can be part of the fun. A great big get together on the most important day for our nation every 4 years. And we know Villagers love their politics.
As I mentioned there are some important local elections for The Villages. None perhaps more important to Villagers present and future than the Amenity Authority election. There is a five person board called the Amenity Authority Committee and they are responsible for deciding how the money you pay in amenity fees will be spent each year. Note that currently this only affects Villagers living in Districts 1-4 North of CR 466. Also, there is a special polling place you have to go to to vote in this election, which is rather inconvenient but its important that you do in fact vote.
There are 16 candidates up for the 5 positions. You can read more about The Villages Amenity Authority Committee election here. There is information on othe Villages Community Development District elections here.
The Villages Vintage Car Club show is coming up on Friday, October 24th. This will take place at Lake Sumter Landing Market Square and will feature more than 50 classic cars on display. For more information visit their website here.
The Villages Daily Sun is looking for the best cooks, or at least the best recipes in The Villages. And they’re giving away a $200 gift card to the recipe they think is the best. Read here for details on how to enter. Good luck and let me know what recipe you submitted! I’m getting hungry just writing this.
This Week in The Villages: Oct. 5-12
Like everyone else in the country, Villagers have been glued to their television and computer screens this week watching their stock market investments including 401(k)’s take a beating. But money hasn’t been the only thing on people’s minds this week in The Villages.
The Havana Country Club opened recently and it sounds like the restaurant at Havana Country Club will be executive “chefed” by George Stella (of Food Network’s Low Carb and Loving It fame). This is a good deal for Villagers wanting to eat healthy. Chalk this up to another great restaurant in The Villages.
If you’re looking for other restaurants both in and around The Villages, be sure to check out The Villages Gourmet Club. They have reviews of more than 275 restaurants in the Villages.
Getting ready for the holidays is always fun in The Villages and the craft fair at the Lake Miona Recreation Center helped get it off to a great start. The rec center was full of residents hawking their wares, including custom made wreaths just in time for the holidays.
Last but not least, the political season is in full swing with Villagers still buzzing over Sarah Palin’s (or was it Tina Fey?) visit a few weeks ago. Palin is on the cover of The Villages Magazine for October. Perhaps Palin’s most famous gaffe was when she declared being able to see Russia from her back yard. Perhaps she could see Cuba from her podium in The Villages. Er, maybe that’s just Havana Country Club.
