Free Golf Carts In The Villages Through Golf Cart Tax Credit?

golfcartGolf carts are a ubiquitous part of life at The Villages. In this blog, we’ve covered golf cart safety and golf cart insurance, but how about a free golf cart? It might seem too good to be true, but, using a federal tax stimulus program, golfers across the country are walking away with a free cart. You can get a free cart in The Villages, or you could walk away with some extra cash in your pocket.

The Villages Golf Cart Man touts this deal: “Get a Free Golf Cart or make $2,000 doing absolutely nothing!”

The Lady Lakes golf cart dealer has gained attention in recent weeks for his creative deal, getting coverage in several national publications. The dealer even links his web site to the October Wall Street Journal article highlighting his program.

Here’s how it works: You pay $8,000 out of pocket for a golf cart. (Discounted from the regular $10,000 price). Get the $5,300 tax rebate from Uncle Sam (now making your out-of-pocket $2,700). Lease the cart back to the dealer for 27 months at $100 per month. After 27 months, you can either keep the golf cart or the dealer will buy it from you for $2,000.

Of course, certain restrictions apply. The program applies to the purchase of selected, federally approved vehicles. Most importantly, whoever buys the golf cart needs to have a minimum income tax liability. And there are no guarantees. The dealer’s site cautions buyers to check with their CPA before purchasing any of the vehicles for a tax credit.

The Federal Tax Stimulus program was designed by the government to promote eco-friendly electric cars; street-legal vehicles, with appropriate safely equipment like rearview mirrors, turn signals and three-point seat belts.

I’m sure Congress was thinking along the lines of a Ford Escape or a Chevy Volt because the stimulus program specifically excluded  “vehicles manufactured primarily for off-road use, such as for use on a golf course.”  However, savvy entrepreneurs found on-road electric cars that worked on the golf course. These Low Speed/ Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (LSV/ NEV) are battery-powered and typically run at speeds less than 35 mph and are plugged into a 110-volt outlet to charge. Add a solar panel and charge while you play (and up your tax stimulus).

The Villages Golf Cart Man’s free golf cart program is limited time, first-come, first-serve deal.  As of the end of October, the dealer only had ten carts available. Orders require 50 percent despot. Yes, shipping is available.
